Information on Tosa Washi Paper Making Workshop

At our shop, you can experience making Tosa Washi, one of Japan's three major types of washi paper. We are conducting workshops.
With the guidance of friendly staff, Enjoy making your own one-of-a-kind washi paper using traditional tools.

*The workshop will be conducted in either Japanese or English.
*You can take home the washi paper you create on the day of the experience.

What is Tosa Washi?

"Tosa Washi" is a traditional craft of Kochi Prefecture that is considered one of the three major Japanese paper types, along with "Mino Washi" from Gifu Prefecture and "Echizen Washi" from Fukui Prefecture. It is extremely thin and soft, yet also has excellent durability.

In addition to its beautiful dyeing techniques, it is available in a wide variety of colors, thicknesses, and manufacturing methods, making it often used for the restoration of important cultural properties.

Flow of the experience

  • ①Explanation
    You will be asked to change into a work uniform, and our staff will explain the process for the day.
  • ②Watch videos
    You will watch a video to learn about the history and manufacturing methods of washi paper.
  • ③Skibbling
    Now it's time to actually make washi paper (4 postcards). A staff member will give you a lecture.
  • ④Paste colored Japanese paper
    Choose your favorite from dozens of different colorful Rakusui paper and paste it on.
  • Squeezing and drying
    The fabric is dehydrated by applying strong pressure (squeezing), and then attached to a drying heater to evaporate the water (drying).
  • ⑥Completion
    Once the washi paper has completely dried, your finished postcard will be ready to take home with you on the day.

A gorgeous finish with colored "Rakusui paper"

This plan uses "Rakusui paper" in the finishing process.
Rakusui-gami is a special type of Japanese paper that has been sprayed with water while it is still fresh, creating holes and patterns on the surface. This Rakusui-gami has been beautifully dyed by artisans in Kochi. Choose your favorite piece from dozens of finished products, and place it on top of the Japanese paper you have made yourself to create a gorgeous finish.
